The LGPS is a statutory pension scheme which means that the rules of the scheme are set out in the law, including which employers can participate in the LGPS. The different types of employer able to participate in the LGPS is set out in Schedule 2 of the LGPS regulations 2013.

Scheduled Bodies

Schedule 2, part 1 employers are known as scheduled bodies. They have an automatic right to participate in the LGPS and must offer the LGPS to all eligible employees.

Scheduled Bodies are; County Councils, District Councils, London Boroughs, Fire and Rescue Authorities, Police and Crime Commissioner, Academy Schools.

Designated Bodies

Schedule 2, part 2 employers are known as designated (or resolution) bodies. They are entitled to join the LGPS, but they do not have to. They must pass a resolution stating which employees they will offer the LGPS to.

Designated Bodies are; Parish Councils, Town Councils

Admission Bodies

Schedule 2, part 3 employers are known as admitted bodies. Admitted bodies are able to participate in the scheme through a written agreement known as the Admission Agreement. An admission agreement specifies which employees are eligible for membership. Often referred to as Transferee Admission Bodies (TAB’s) or Community Admission Bodies (CAB’s)

Admission Bodies are; TUPE transferred from an LGPS employer like a school outsourcing, Bodies with a ‘Community of interest’, a public service connected to an LGPS employer.
